This new town prospered due to trade with nearby Bakersfield until 1857 when gold began arriving in large quantities at Comstock Lode near Stockton according to one report In 1850s small amounts of silver were found along Melville Creek near today's Chico but no Cache Creek goldfields were discovered until 1863 when an ad for land at Clearwater Gulch led John Cushman to prospect there over a period of several months beginning February 8, 1863 Cushman claimed a claim on section 5 (or Cleary Gulch), northeast corner section 6 north side of present-day McClellan Street (), northwest corner section 7 south side of present-day First Street (). Cushman named his discovery "San Francisco". However this claim was challenged by George Hearst who across the country had been making huge profits mining silver outcroppings around Sacramento River that he had leased to Californians under various flags including Mexican Land Grant #8 (1865). He won an arbitration hearing which ruled that because sections 5 & 6 were within ranch hands' territorial boundaries then they must be considered part of Hearst Ranch even though their claims overlapped with those of others . As a result most likely about 60% or more all Ulysses S Grant's personal property located within 25 miles east or west of Los Angeles was owned by Mexicans under grants from Mexico City
