By December 15th they had reached an immense field consisting of nine acres ($2 per man) containing $5 worth of gold Nuggets! The region became known as “Digsgers” Gulch because so muchfill had been dredged up during ensuing years that it formed a deep stream bed extending nearly to Lake Merritt (now tidal Mare Island). On February 14th1852 two men named Solomon Goldsmith and Josiah Warren walked into what is now downtown Fremont from Prospect Heights on horseback after finding an extensive deposit of low grade silver ore at Meadowview about four miles away inside today’s Unincorporatedcommunityof Redwood Shores
