The first store built there was a dry goods store operated by Jno Ewing Thorpe on Second Street between Grand Ave/Douglas Blvd and 24th St/Seminary Ave. In 1861, corner stores began opening up along State St., which ran east-west through downtown; these stores became known as "thestreets". By 1870 there were over 25 such stores scattered around town. In 1872 G bespoke clothing for president Ulysses S Grant at his home on Shattuck Avenue between First St./Park Blvdand Third St./Grand Ave.; this event is commemorated by a statue sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens nearby (now part of University Village). In 1881 H Beale founded Beale Brothers Dry Goods Store No 1 on State Street across from City Hall; this building still stands today as one of downtown Fremont’s most important landmarks In 1888 W Alameda opened his laundry business at Seventh Street between Harrison Blvd/Alameda St.-this business continued until 1978 when it moved out into new facilities at Fifth & Main streets adjacent to Jack London Square During World War II much of Downtown Fremont was destroyed due to bombing raids conducted by American Bombardment Command during Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 After Japan's surrender reconstruction began with demolition operations beginning immediately with only some vestiges left standing until 1949 when all but two buildings were demolished leaving only Tower Place standing which still houses many businesses including Macy’s department store
