Fremont, California is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 892 at the 2010 census. Fremont became a city in 1853, and has since been the county seat of San Francisco. The first European to see and inhabit what is now Fremont was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on October 26, 1542 when he landed on the coast of Point Reyes Peninsula from his sailing ship Santa Maria de la Cruz. This event is also documented by Marcos de Niza as early as 1602 when he visited Monterey Bay. Spanish traders had presence in this area for over 100 years before American sailors arrived in 1770 and claimed it for the new nation of America. In 1853, The legislature of California founded San Francisco and appropriated $5,000 to be used for founding a town in that location which would include everything within present-day Fremont Township including all that lay east of State Route 2 (the "Gold Rush Trail"). On November 20th - Thanksgiving Day - Lieutenant Governor José Paloma Pacheco ordered surveyors to commence work on what would become Fremont Creek Road (now U.S. Route 101), part of today's Gold Rush National Historical Park & Preserve! On January 6th 1854 - Valentine's Day - General James Houltree reported from Sacramento how good things were going with gold seekers streaming into Yosemite Valley from all around the state looking for their fortune near Coloma Lake! On January 10th – Valentine's Day - Captain John Sutter sailed into Golden Gate Harbour with his largest cargo yet; thousands of head of cattle! These were not just any old cows but some very choice specimens being offered at high prices by Spain’s king “los estados unidos” (the United States). Houltree christened his vessels USS Discovery and USS Columbia after these fine vessels bringing news back home about rich goldfields beyond our shores!!! Just think about it; ships sailing into waters we know today ONLY 2 months earlier carrying loads of gold coins worth tens or hundreds of millions dollars!! In less than two months America had taken control of much key land in Northern California!!! What an incredible accomplishment!!!! Only one year later on February 14th 1855 Commodore John Doolittle led his squadron comprising 11 naval vessels up Mission Bayou to attack Ohlone Indians living thereabouts during what became known as the Alamo Incident !! It should also be noted that Commodore Doolittle was only one man against an entire Mexican army besieging Fort Vivian which included cannons powerful enough to down even large warships like HMS Warrior !! So great was Californios' success that Mexico finally ceded Alta California (northwest corner Of Baja California) to America effective March 23rd 1846!!!!! All told this amazing story tells us that while many people did make money during the Gold Rush era there were more deaths caused by accidents or disease than anything else !!
