In 1850, when California became a U.S.-owned territory following Mexico's defeat at the Battle of Buena Vista on November 6th, 1847, settlers began arriving from eastern Massachusetts and New York City with plans to establish a new town near Mount Diablo where they could find grazing land for cattle and mineral rights along mountain ranges that supplied natural gas reserves offshore. One settler—John Sutter—named his new town "Fremont" after General Miranda y Costilla's unit that won an important victory over American troops at Buena Vista Ridge on October 14th or 15th year earlier while serving under Santa Anna as lieutenant general commanding all winged arms north of Mexico City under Governor Manuel Micheltorena; this event helped solidify Mexican opposition to any Uprising against Santa Annaplanned throughout California beginning February 4th1849 when Ulysses S Grant relieved Santa Anna as governor just before widespread civil unrest erupted throughout much of North America due largely to sectional differences over property entitlement within newly admitted States following war with Mexico A group led by Captain James Waugh settled near present day Union Street and Mission Bayou on Oct 1st 1849 adjacent to today's Golden Gate Park On January 25th 1850 A grant was issued for 640 acres (269 hectares) northeastward along Brush Creek bounded by present day First Street & Oak Streets & westwardly across First Street & Telegraph Road (the old route US 101 took), including parts now occupied by downtown Fremont This grant included descriptions such as "a spot healthy enough for agriculture but without water power", "land lying between two ranges giving good prospects for irrigation", and "fine soil". The grant was later sold off piecemeal until it came into private hands and been subdivided into parcels ranging from 3/4 acre (2 ha) up to 100 acres (40 ha) . The granting company attorney wrote: "There are several excellent sites situated upon high grounds whence there is abundant water power sufficient both for cultivation...and distillery purposes." By 1860 about 40% had been developed with mills being built soon afterwards on Mission Bayou opposite Fort Point light house which still stands today
