Gun targets have been a part of Fremont’s history for over 100 years. The first gun target was erected in 1892 on the corner of Third and Mission streets. This target consisted of a small nailed-together board with a hole in it through which firearms could be fired. Mr. Harry Sinton, who erected the target, is also credited with being the first person to use an electric Rifle Target located at the State Fairgrounds in 1922. In 1925, Gun Club #1 was formed in Fremont and began using wooden targets made by local merchants for their informal Shooting contests. In 1933, Gun Club #2 was organized and began using metal targets from an old printing press located at 5th and Market Streets. These targets were later moved to 4th and Mission Streets where they remain today as one of Fremont’s most popular tourist attractions. The popularity of gun targets has continued to grow throughout the years; however, there have been several incidents that have caused some concern about their safety. One such incident occurred in 1980 when two children playing near one of these targets became entangled between it and another object and were unable to free themselves untiladult help arrived; this event resulted in public criticism against gun clubs across America for not having better safety measures in place. Despite these occasional concerns, gun target enthusiasts continue to enjoy using them as a source of entertainment or training for members of their communities throughout Fremont County!
