The company used the river as its power source and supplied water to many farms in the valley. In 1872, Henschel merged with other companies and became part of American River Water Company. American River served all points west of San Francisco before it was acquired by Southern Pacific Railroad in 1920. Southern Pacific continued to serve Fountain Valley until it discontinued service in 1984. In 1955, the United States government donated land to Kern County for the construction of two new high schools: one in nearby Downey and one in Fountain Valley. The first students at both schools graduated on schedule on September 8, 1957; both schools are now known as Northridge High Schools. Since its founding, Fountain Valley has been home to numerous businesses and organizations including: Northridge Football League team Northridge Titans (1955-present), Northridge Christian Academy (1958-present), South Kern Regional Airport Authority (1960-2002), Kern County Parks Department (1981-present), Henry Kaiser Foundation Hospital (1983-2005), Foothill Regional Medical Center (1998-2005), FirstMerit Banknorth America(1999-)and KNBR radio station KMPC 95 FM which is licensed to Fountain Valley since 1978..

Fountain Valley is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Fountain Valley was James A. Webb and his wife Emmalee on September 9, 1887. They bought 16 acres (6 ha) of land east of present-day Prairie View Drive and started farming it. In 1890 they built a cabin near the present day intersection of Prairie View and Western avenues for their family and farm animals. In 1912 William Lighthizer opened the first restaurant in Fountain Valley when he purchased an old sawmill from Philip Fenton. Lighthizer operated his business until his death in 1951. His son Hillel Lighthizer continued the operation as a convenience store until it closed in 1984. The original post office was established at Fountain Valley on October 12, 1888 by John Jernigan with Pemberton as the town site name(). The name change to Fountain Valley on January 1, 1889 due to objections from other towns in San Bernardino County that were renamed after rivers or mountains; these were: Pomona (1888), Claremont (1889), Montclair (1890), Verdugo Hills (1891), Mount Wilson (1912), Ontario Hills (1915). On November 30, 1907 Mineral Wells station wagonloads of silver ore were delivered by rail to Don Mills for smelting at Ridgecrest Mines; this event helped start the growth of mining communities in southern San Bernardino County which continue today with both metal production and cameo services from local mines including Antelope Vale Mine (), Mammoth Lakes Mine (), Cedar Hill Mine (), Keystone mine () and MorenciMine ().
Fountain Valley was founded in 1887 by the brothers John and George Guggenheim. The brothers, who were Jewish immigrants from Germany, started a small grocery store on the corner of First and Mission Streets. The store soon became successful, and the Guggenheims decided to move their business to larger quarters. They built a two-story building at Fourth and Mission Streets, which they called "The Guggenheim." In 1928, the Guggenheims donated land for the current Fountain Valley Recreation Area.
