Fountain Valley is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 41,591 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Orange County and is bordered by Anaheim to the north, Garden Grove to the east, Irvine to the south and west, and Tustin to the northwest. The city has been named for Fountain Valley reservoir which it straddles along its northern border. The first recorded settlement in Fountain Valley was made up of a group of farmers who set out from Riverside on July 28th 1892. They established themselves at what is now known as Park Avenue and started farming what would become Fountain Valley. By 1915 there were over 100 people living in Fountain Valley. In 1916 a dam was built upstream of present day downtown providing water for irrigation purposes and also creating an artificial lake that served as a recreational area for locals and those working near it (today's University Village). In 1938 original citrus crops were introduced into the area by Don Ayer with his then new Ayer Citrus Ranch which included land now within Downtown Fountain Valley boundaries (Ayer Plaza). Don Ayer descendants still produce oranges today as part of their farm business! In 1945 when war began production quotas were put in place limiting how much fruit could be grown within certain areas so many farmers turned to slash-and-burn techniques which led to increased fires throughout the valley resulting in more acreage burned than ever before! This type of burning created ashes that lay across entire hillsides leaving behind beautiful landscapes today! It wasn’t until 1957 when construction began on what would become known as Main Street – later renamed State Highway 9 – making Fountain Valley one of only three cities in Orange County with street names! Construction continued until 1959 when it was replaced by Interstate 5 making it easier access from all sides! Today you can see evidence of this history all around town including abandoned buildings dating back to those early days when streets had no numbers or names!

The valley began as part of Rancho Cucamonga and was named for John Sutter, who founded the town of Fountain Valley in 1853. The name "Fountain Valley" also refers to two important water sources: Springwater Creek and Indian Wells Creek. The first mention of Fountain Valley appears to be on a map dated October 1, 1853, which shows land that later became known as Rancho Cucamonga. In 1864, the Mexican government granted grazing rights to American settlers in what would become Orange County. Many of these early settlers were men from Rhode Island and New England who had come across the Water route while travelling through Mexico City on their way southward. This route crossed over into Mexico near today's downtown Mexico City before continuing on to Acapulco de Juárez (today's Chimaltenango). One group of these pioneers named their new settlement after John Sutter - Fountain Valley was eventually renamed for him. In 1873, George Wirz made an unsuccessful bid for governor of California against Manuel Nieto on the grounds that he could bring more business opportunities to his home state by moving into central California instead of east Coast Los Angeles where Nieto lived and exercised power. Wirz moved his family back East then west again including a stopover in Fountain Valley during their journey before finally settling down around 1880 near present-day El Toro Village northeast of Anaheim Hills adjacent toSpringwater Reservoir Wirz built a large house here called Grosse Pointe Manor which remains standing today although it has been extensively remodeled several times over its history Also located here were Wirz’s three brothers – George Washington Wirtz (1862-1948), Julius Caesar Wirtz (1868-1939) and Harry Jerome Wirtz (1870-1934). All three brothers died young except Harry Jerome who predeceased both his brothers . Of note are two large garage/workshop buildings still standing on either side of El Toro Boulevard just northwest of Interstate 5 about midway between Riverside Drive & Westminster Street just outside Anaheim Hills .
