In 1906, Fountains began functioning as public baths in downtown Fountain Valley before becoming a municipally owned entity in 1928 with full city rights and independence from neighboring Antelope Valley municipalities until 1987 when it became again part of Antelope Valleys municipal government under the leadership of Mayor Donny Youngbloods office and City Councilmember Rudy Martinez The community experienced some growth during World War II with the opening of military airfields nearby such as Luke Air Force Base which helped spur development along Main Street In recent years there has been significant redevelopment around Main Street with new businesses moving into former industrial properties throughout the valley New shopping malls have opened up in neighboring cities such as Lancaster (just east), Downey (just north) and Hermosa Beach (west). In 1887, James Irvine and his wife, Annie, came to southern California from Ireland to start a new life and found themselves in need of farmland. They soon got their hands on some land that they named Fountain Valley after the nearby Fountain Creek. The Irvines brought in many pioneers who helped build the cityscape that we see today. TheIrvine family business was one of the earliest businesses in FountainValley. They started out selling eggs and chickens, but eventually became known for their fruit products such as apples and grapes. Over time they expanded their operations into other crops such as vegetables and flowers. Today their company continues to be a major player in the valley economy. In addition to their business interests, James Irvine also spent much time exploring new horizons outside of Dublin for his new society: The Irish American Chamber of Commerce (IAC). He believed that this organization could make a real impact on American society – something he believed would benefit both Irish-Americans living in America and American-Irish relations overall. In 1913 IAC published its first journal called "The Irish Times", which quickly became popular among Irish-American residents throughout Southern California! James Irvine was an active leader within IAC until his death in 1928; his memory will continue to be remembered here at FountainValley!
