Fountain Valley was founded in 1911 by John Sutter and James Worthy as a citrus orchard and fruit packing town on the eastern edge of what is now Orange County. The name "Fountain Valley" comes from nearby Fountain Park, which had an artificial water feature that supplied drinking water for settlers in the early days. In 1907, Sutter built his own mill and began to produce flour for local bakeries. A year later he opened a store near what is now Topanga Boulevard and Pico Boulevard to sell goods made from fruits grown on his orchards. By 1919, Sutter's Store had become one of Southern California's largest grocery stores with more than 12,000 square feet of floor space. In 1931, ranches were established in parts of the valley by farmers who wanted to provide grazing land for their livestock while they developed new markets for their crops. In 1934, development started on what became known as Miracle Mile – a planned community that included high-rise housing developments and shopping centers across four avenues – when Mayor Frank Jaffe leased land east of Figueroa Street from Thomas Edison Company for use as an open-air research park focused on electricity generation and testing new technologies. The Miracle Mile area quickly became one of Orange County's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its variety of architecture including churches (including Clarendon Cathedral), hotels (including Disney's Polynesian Resort), theaters (including Regal Cinema), restaurants (including Olive Garden),and shops (including Sears). In 1961–62 Californication: A Regional History book by Don Kates described Fountain Valley as "the last bastion west of Pasadena" because it was home to many people who helped make Los Angeles what it is today: actors/actresses Norma Shearer and Shirley MacLaine; engineers Roy Rosenfeldt and Gideon Weil; architects Edward Ladd and Edwin Chan; builders Richard Meier and Norman Rockwell; social workers Arthur Ashe and Billie Jean King; businesspeople Herb Kohler Sr., Irving Kirshner Jr., Art modernicki Today there are few remnants remaining from those days other then some homes still standing along Miracle Mile where you can see evidence that companies like GEICO once did business here back in those days
