Fountain Valley is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,780 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The name "Fountain Valley" comes from the Fountain and Spring Creek valleys, which were named after two sources of water: the Fountain River and Spring Creek. The townsite was first plotted in 1876 and began to be developed as a munitions plant in 1906. The community's name change came about because of its location just outside Los Angeles City limits on both sides of the San Andreas Fault. When Los Angeles annexed Kern County in 1913, Fountain Valley became part of Hollywood Heights and remained so until 1959 when it reverted back to Kern County jurisdiction. In 1960, a new elementary school was built east of town along State Route 168 and the community quickly grew again with housing developments being built along State Route 168 between 1957-1959 and then again from 1970-1978 around Interstate 5 (I-5). In 2000, I-5 was upgraded to include an expressway leading into downtown Los Angeles that changed much of what had once been available for development near Fountainspring Canyon Recreation Area east of town including a large shopping mall known as M&M's Place which closed down in 2007 following several scandals among employees there including2004 fire that destroyed over 130 acres within park boundaries; one year old video footage suggesting employees smoking cigarettes inside building before fire started; alligators found deadnear amusement park; 2006 closing of local movie theater due to low attendance rates) . Fountain Valley is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 23,045 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino−Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fountain Valley was founded on December 24, 1887 by local farmers and Mine operators as a small community named Spanish Lakes. its name comes from the nearby Fountain of Paradise which had been built by the Morongo Band of Mission Indians in 1847 as their spiritual center. In 1906, the town became one of fourteen cities to be incorporated within Riverside County when it was created from parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. The history of Fountain Valley can be traced back to 1887 when local farmers and Mine operators founded Spanish Lakes as a small community just outside present-day Fountain Valley on December 24th from land that they had acquired from Mexican landowners east of what is now known as Koreatown in Los Angeles. The original inhabitants were Native American manobo people who called the area "Palo Verde" meaning 'red earth'. By 1905, following annexation by Riverside County, Spanish Lakes had become one of fourteen cities incorporation within that county when it was created from parts of both Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties - one of only two with populations over 10,000 at that time (the other being Pasadena). Spanish Lakes quickly grew into a thriving community with businesses such as groceries, flour mills and saddlesmiths dotting its streets. With so many businesses active, there were also plenty of opportunity for social interaction among its residents which helped make this small town an important cultural center for south-central California during the early 20th century. Notables who lived and worked in Spanish Lake include American sculptor Eadweard Muybridge; actor/director James Cagney; composer Jerome Kern; writer Roy Acuff; businessman Harry Chandler; Secretary to President Harding Wilfred Burge; actors/directors John Gilbert and Lewis Milestone; author John Steinbeck among others. Spanish Lake's heyday came during World War I when it served as an airfield for fighter planes used by General Pershing's Third Army against Kaiser Wilhelm II's German forces near downtown Lodi before eventually becoming defunct due to structural problems associated with wartime military activity in that area (it later reopened under new management but closed again in 1935). After World War I ended however, civic leaders decided that another era should be established at Spanish Lake - one where commerce could thrive while providing opportunities for physical education and socialization amongst its citizens leading to growth in recreational activities such as fishing expeditions conducted out towards Orange Coast Harbor or bowling leaguesspringing up throughout southern California during those years... During prohibition period (1920-1933) running parallel to post-war economic boom & growth at Spanish Lakes (& other newly annexed Southern Californian towns), crime rates soared amidst scarce resources & limited police manpower available resulting gang wars between locals & outsiders over control cf resources monopolized by few key players... Beginning around 1930s thru WWII era (!), steady decline & eventual closure permanently shutter most businesses owned/operated by Hispanic bourgeoisie within SBC [South Central Business District] until all Hispanicry lost access significant portions ol their economyryanifying once more many longtime African Americans workingclass whites escaping lynching mobs after WWI high school dropouts moving westward looking for Opportunity
Fountain Valley was founded in 1879 by George H. Hopkins and his wife Anna Maria, who named it for the Fountain of jets in central London. The community attracted farmers and their families from nearby Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley, as well as some from farther afield. By 1912, the population had grown to 1,500 people. The first post office opened in Fountain Valley on November 15, 1879. In 1907, the town incorporated and began to grow rapidly with new development including a hospital (1907), a cotton gin (1910), an electric streetlight (1920), and homes for soldiers during World War I (1918). In 1935, the US Postal Service discontinued mail delivery within Fountain Valley because of budget cuts. However, residents continued to receive packages through local mail carriers until 1978 when they switched to UPS or FedEx service. During World War II, Fountain Valley was home to Camp Bonifacio which served as command center for Japanese forces in Southern California during the war years. Although much of the camp has been demolished over time due to environmental concerns, remnants of some buildings still stand today within the city limits of Pomona
