Fountain Valley, California is a small town located in the San Bernardino Mountains foothills of southern California. It was settled by Americans in 1881 and has remained an agricultural center with significant ammunition production ever since. Ammunition production began at the hands of early settlers as they carved out small parcels of land for grazing and farming. By 1894, Factory No. 1 had been built to produce shells from blue-grit sandstone quarried nearby. The company continued to grow and prosper during World War I as munitions demand increased in Europe. At the same time, Factory No. 2 became one of the most important ammunition manufacturing plants in America due to its large single batch production capacity and emphasis on quality control. In 1945, Factory No. 2 merged with other American munitions companies to form United Defense Works (UDW). UDW would go on to become one of the largest firearms manufacturers in the world and continue producing ammunition under multiple brands until 1997 when it was acquired by Remington Arms Incorporated (RAI). Ammunition production at RAI would come to a halt after World War II but resumed following the Korean War thanks to new technology developments like self-loading rifles which allowed for reloading while firing live rounds instead of relying on percussion caps or loading disks which could be destroyed by fire or accidents. This technological advance also led to a resurgence in interest in old-fashioned muzzleloader shooting as well as hunting traditional deer, elk, turkey, rabbit, quail and black bear populations across North America . Ammunition production resumed once again after Korea Prolapsed but ultimately came to a close following 9/11th terrorist attacks which caused extensive damage both at work sites within RAI itself as well as throughout America's commercial ammunition supply chains .
