By 1880, the population had reached 4,000 people. In 1907, a canal was constructed through Fountain Valley to provide water for Arroyo Seco Village which grew up around it. Today, much of what used to be farming land has been turned into shopping malls and residential neighborhoods: Arroyo Seco Village has become an entertainment district with movie theaters, restaurants, and stores; Claremont has become a bedroom community for affluent folks located just south of downtown Pomona; while Fountain Valley—the center of all this action—remains rural with few buildings taller than 10 feet (3 meters). There are still several small towns surrounding Fountain Valley including Cottonwood Heights to the north and Garden Grove to the south but these have lost most or all their businesses or residents to development over time.
