Foster City, California is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. It was established on April 12, 1887 by John Fetterman and his brothers, James and George Foster. The city had a population of around 100 people when it first became recognized as an important center for citrus production. In 1905, Foster City was named one of the ten most Important American cities by The New York Times. The area that now makes up Foster City was originally part of three ranchos given to John Fetterman by Mexican officials: Rancho San Pablo de las Pulgas y las Tritinas (1865), Rancho Santa Clara de Atacama (1876), and Rancho Rinconada del Oro (1885). When Fetterman deed the properties to his four brothers he also received title to 725 acres (2 km²) within what is now downtown Foster City. In 1887, John Fetterman founded the First National Orange Growers Association in Foster City with himself as president and Wm. Harker as secretary. This organization helped lead to the growth of orange farming in America. By 1912, about one-third of America’s oranges were grown in California. That same year, John Fetterman donated land for a new city park which became known as “Foster Park” after him and his wife Esther Jane Foster gave $10,000 towards its creation. The years following World War II saw continued growth in Foster City with industry becoming more prevalent than agriculture; however, there were some setbacks such as when local businessmen Arthur Ashe and Lew Alcindor bought majority ownership shares in the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team during the late 1960s; this led to increased development pressures on downtown streetscapes seemingly without any regard for public input or consent from citizens who would be impacted negatively by this increasing commercialism.
