When the first settlers arrived in what is now Foster City, California, they were met with much hostility from the local Native Americans. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were Frenchmen and Spanish missionaries who evangelized for Christianity and wanted to help build a better future for their people. They brought with them European-style clothing, which was not well received by the natives. This led to a rivalry between the two groups that would continue until 1848 when California became a state and firearms began being imported into the new country. Foster City is a city in San Francisco County, California. The population was 907 at the 2010 census. It is named after James Foster, an American Civil War veteran and landowner who donated the land for the city. The first people to live in Foster City were military veterans who had served in the Mexican-American War and World War I. They built their homes on 10 acres of undeveloped land near Market Street and Fillmore Avenue. In 1910, the first post office was established in Foster City. By 1912, it had outgrown its original small town size and began to grow rapidly with the arrival of numerous immigrants from Asia, Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand. In 1916, Foster City became one of four towns in San Francisco County that formed a new city government under Mayor George Aronson. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II as Japanese Americans were incarcerated at Larkins Field internment camp located just east of town (now part of Fort Mason). The largest concentration of Japanese Americans living in California occurred within a few miles of downtown San Francisco; however, no major fires or bombings took place within Foster City during World War II. In 1951, Foster City annexed part of DalyCity which made it easier for people from DalyCity to move into the largely white working-class area east of downtown San Francisco without facing discrimination or violence from local residents
