Foster City is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 34,671 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Peninsula. Fostering some of the earliest recorded human activity in this area were several small villages dotting what is now Foster City and Potrero Hill between 1853 and 1857. In 1906, after years of discussion, the Board of Supervisors voted to change its name from "Foster City" to "San Francisco". The first post office in Foster City was established on December 12, 1853. The original name for the town was Strawberry Vale because many strawberry vines grew there. When Congress passed an act November 15, 1850 which designated Rancho Vallejo as part of San Francisco Bay Area it became necessary for early settlers to find new homes and names for their townships or districts. On February 11, 1854 James Waddell erected his house at 425 Harrison Street within today's boundaries of Foster City proper; he named it New Market after himself and his brother-in-law Samuel Morse who had donated land to establish a market place in Palo Alto (now Palo Alto). Waddell's store served as a nucleus around which other stores developed throughout the town during its early days. By 1860 there were fourteen stores in Foster City with $5 per month rent due all residents regardless of occupation or size family business could not maintain without special equipment needed only by those engaged in agricultural products such as tenant farmers/landlords receiving no more than two acres (1 hectare) of production per year or men working on public works projects supervised by an appointed official such as sheriff or engineer
