Hearst continued to operate his store until his death in 1899. His son William inherited his business after his father's death; William renamed it The Armory Company (now known as Hornady). During World War II, Foster City played an important role in the development of munitions production in Northern California thanks to its location at the tip of Highway 101 between Stockton and Modesto. In 1889, Mayor George Hearnshaw designated downtown FosterCity as the "Local Government Center" for San Francisco County because then-County Supervisor Samuel Johnson desired that all local government functions be centralized under one roof so that efficient communication could take place between all levels of government within county jurisdiction. This move led to other technological advances during this time - such as opening of our current street system - that were not possible or practical without centralization of resources. In 1912 when San Francisco annexed Contra Costa County and gained full political authority over its citizens, FosterCity suffered some negative consequences due to lack of development opportunities within city limits until finally beginning significant redevelopment in 1955 when Interstate 80 bypassed downtowns through Hayward Hills area creating more commercial districts closer to I-580/I-880 while also providing much needed retail space within walking distance for most citizens who continued living within their neighborhoods rather than moving out into areas served by I-580/I-880 only minutes away! Today there are few if any impediments remaining preventing further redevelopment – certainly indicating how successfully Central Business District has been managed throughout its history!
