On December 15, 2009, Fortuna police officer Juan Gomez was conducting a traffic stop on suspicion of driving with a suspended license. As the officer approached Gomez, he administered his department-issued taser to Gomez in order to detain him. Gomez then got out of the car and began to walk away from the officer. The officer discharged his taser against Gomez, inflicting serious injury.
Fortuna is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,070 at the 2010 census. It is located in Fresno County. In the late 1940s-1950s, local developers undertook extensive renovation of older neighborhoods such as La Vista Elementary School ( now part of US 101) which became known as "the rediscovery" period for Fortuna because much new development had been permitted without further review by then-Mayor Don Briggs or City Councilmember Herb Wesson who opposed any more residential redevelopment within walking distance of downtown businesses then existing on both sides of Mill Road including today's civic center Historic district). This program included replacement of many originaladobe homes with newer style single family dwellings while also demolition/repair/replacementof several churches which had been abandoned since the Great Depression years following sharp declines in attendance at services led by Bishop James Hynes whose predecessor had destroyed most brick churches in Fresno during his 13 year tenure as pastor (most notable being St Ignatius' Cathedral ). Today, residents are encouraged to maintain their neighborhoods by voting on city policies encouraging walkability; maintaining open space; & reducing vehicular traffic on main streets within 1/2 mile limits along arterial corridors downtown; & providing increased access thru public transportation options Downtown
