In 1892, Fortuna noted the development of a new telescope by American astronomer Edward A. Barnard. The Observatory's first image was taken on December 12th, 1892 with the observatory's 4-inch telescope. Fortuna is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 26,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located on the western edge of Mount Tamalpais National Monument. The name "Fortuna" comes from Latin meaning "the lucky one." In 1824, Captain John Dutton discovered Fortuna Island off the coast of Marin County while exploring for new land to sell to American citizens during his explorations of Northern California. A year later he named the island after Fortuna, his mistress. In 1835, James Watt built a small lighthouse on what is now Pinnacle Point in order to guide shipping past Fortuna Island and its reefs into easy navigation through the channel between San Francisco and Tiburon. This lighthouse served as a warning beacon until it was destroyed by fire in 1861. A post office called Fortuna was established in 1836; it changed its name to Marin City in 1849 after becoming an incorporated city under state law. The first mayor was William Higginson (1850-1853). In 1862 Marin City annexed Sutro Heights which made it second largest city within Marin County behind San Rafael and before Buena Park became an independent city in 1959. On July 4th 1886 Douglas Fairbanks crashed his plane into Mt Diablo near present day Sausalito killing all four passengers including Fairbanks himself In 1969 local artist Don Maki created two large paintings – "The Falcon's Return" (left) and "Fortunata" (right) – that depict fishing boats filled with people coming ashore at Fortuna from various points around town during early summer days
