In 1847, following gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill and Fillmore Hill outside Los Angeles City Limits, US Major General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered Major José María Narváez y Costilla to explore these new sites east of Fresno Valley with two ships searching for fresh water sources and mineral deposits near Perfecto Lake and the San Joaquin River floodplain.
