In 1949, the city became home to the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) when it moved from San Diego to north Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1969, Cal Poly began awarding degrees in engineering and business administration. The city's first major redevelopment project took place in 1978 when it became home to SRI International Inc.'s headquarters for its sun-drying chemical divisions. In 2003, Cal Poly announced that it would close its doors for good after more than 60 years of enrollment and operations; however, there have been sporadic efforts over the years to reopen the university as an affiliated institution with UCLA or other universities interested in taking over its programs and assets.
