In 1865 when Don Pedro Anaya founded Rancho Rinconada it became one of the largest land grants in Central Valley history with over . In 1880 it passed back to Anaya’s heirs who sold it to Colonel Ransom Harker on July 1st, 1886 for $2 million dollars which divided it among his five children: Harry Harker (Ransom’s father), Mabel Harker (Harlan’s mother), Cecil Harker (Harry’s brother), Louise Mayo Alquist (Lulu’s aunt) and John Doheny (John Doheny Sr.). Harker started work on the first schoolhouse in 1896 but due to hail damage he abandoned it before completion; however, because there are several similar buildings still standing today totaling around 53 feet long by 16 feet wide by 10 feet deep they are considered historical landmarks. The building has been listed as a protected landmark since 1978 by the National Register of Historic Places program. From 1906 until 1957 when Prohibition ended Gilded Age corruption stopped this community from prospering so much like other communities such as Shasta County did during that time period; however starting from 1957 until 2009 things have changed with more young adults moving into Fortuna making it an attractive place for businesses such as restaurants, bars and shops while also maintaining its old world charm which makes it popular for tourists throughout Northern California each year.
