Fortuna is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is located north of Bakersfield on U.S. Route 395 and east of the city of Bakersfield. Fortuna was founded in 1887 by Jens Agerholm and his wife Anna Karenina Svoboda as an agricultural community on a piece of ranch land that he had purchased from the Gonzales family. It became a small town after Agerholm's death in 1943 and again after his wife's death in 1957. Fortuna has been called "the most prosperous small town in Kern County." The economy depends largely upon agriculture, but there are also several manufacturing businesses related to education, health care, construction and other services - many of which have moved away since 2000 when the local sectional school district closed its doors for lack of students. In recent years several new restaurants and bars have opened up around town while Fortuna High School has seen significant renovation and expansion efforts that include new classrooms, a gymnasium and parking garage as well as enhancements to existing infrastructure such as water systems, streetlights andlighting along with a brand new football stadium that will be home to the FHSAA’s Kern Valley Football League team starting in 2020.

Fortuna is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Fortuna post office was founded in 1881. The name "Fortuna" comes from the Latin word "fortuna," meaning "fortune." In 1830, David Wilkinson discovered gold and silver in the area now known as Fortuna. Gold and silver were found on various properties until 1851 when George Wetherbee located a claim on what is now Main Street. By 1853, several other men had claimed portions of this land, but it wasn't until February 1861 that George Wetherbee became proprietor of the entire claim which he named Fortuna after his good fortune (the nymphs who once populated the area). In 1865, James Hickey patented a rancho called Rancho San Fernando which included present-day Fortuna and unincorporated areas around it including present-day Springdale and Cottonwood Heights. This grant provided grazing land for cattle and later became agricultural land with orchards and vineyards; however, most of this acreage was never developed because there was no water to support it. In 1902 by vote of the town's citizens an election was held to determine whether to annex neighboring Springdale into Fortuna or keep it separate as Springdale had been doing since 1870 when its own incorporation ordinance went into effect. After much discussion local residents voted overwhelmingly in favor annexation into Fortuna becoming one municipality with a population of over 2,000 people! The first post office at Fortunate opened on December 3rd 1881 under the name “New Beginnings” due to lack of space at previous offices associated with earlier settlements such as Tomales (founded November 5th 1857), Menifee (founded January 20th 1860) etc., all situated near already existing settlements such as Tomales Bayou where settlers could boat access during springtime for gathering wild fruits and vegetables which they then sold along Corpus Christi Roadrunner downriver before returning home during fall months aboard their vessels “Patriots”/“Osprey”/“Skylark” etc.; these early days saw many pioneers coming downriver via steamboats from points east including Benicia Bayou where Mission Dolores sat
