Fortuna, California is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the city of Hercules and it lies within Redwood National Park. Fortuna has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. Fortuna is a small town in the U.S. state of California, located on the San Joaquin River. The population was 1,313 at the 2010 census. Fortuna is one of many towns and villages founded by Californian gold miners during the early 19th century. The first known people to live in what is now Fortuna were Native Americans who hunted game and collected plants and fruits from the area around present-day Fortuna Creek. The first European to visit what is now Fortuna was Juan Crespí, a Spanish sailor, on his way from Monterey to Acapulco on December 8, 1769. He named the area "Fortuna" after his patron goddess, Fortune. A post office called "Fortuna" was established in 1838, but it never received any mail because there was no stagecoach service through that part of California then. In 1849 an American party led by Kit Carson explored much of central California and came across what would become present-day Fortuna while exploring Rush Valley near Redding; they named their discovery "Golden Grove". The first permanent settler in what would become Fortuna was James Harkness who built a cabin on Harkness Ranch in 1851 after moving from Oregon City, Oregon where he had been a Mormon missionary for four years earlier. A local store began selling goods nearpresent-day Main Street when it opened its doors in 1865; this store became known as General Store until 1893 when it closed due to lack of customers following World War II shortages of munitions supplies brought about by the Korean War conflict between North Korea and South Korea). In 1903 George Waddell started growing cotton here; this allowed him to sell goods directly to consumers rather than going through local merchants or wholesalers which had helped support other businesses within town limits at that time (Waddell later became mayor of nearby Modesto).
