However, it continues to maintain some significance as a commercial and governmental center today thanks to its location within easy reach of both Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area airports.
Fortuna is a small town in Alameda County, California, located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The population was 9,675 at the 2010 census. Fortuna is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Fortuna was founded by Spanish settlers in 1821 as a fishing village on Point Reyes Station. On November 12, 1826, Captain James Cook anchored his "Endeavor" off Fortuna's point and took possession of what would become British Columbia. A few weeks later, he named it after Fortuna Island in the Mediterranean Sea because its location near Point Reyes made it an ideal anchorage for ships travelling to that area. In 1865 businessman John D'Angelo founded D'Angelo & Sons sandpaper manufacturers in nearby Emeryville and moved production to Fortuna from Emeryville because of its better harbor access and quality maritime materials available there. By 1901 Fortuna had a population of 710 people and two schools: one for girls and one for boys. It became an agricultural community with dairy farming becoming prevalent in the early 20th century; but by 1930 only three houses remained standing in the town square; all were torn down during that decade's housing shortage caused by World War II inflationary pressures brought about by wartime growth within California's agricultural sector. The post-war boom saw another surge in population growth which resulted in more than 4,000 new residents moving into what had been a sleepy fishing village known primarily for its sandy beaches – until they started to build subdivisions with names like 'Granada Beach', 'Anchor Bay', etc., filling up every inch of open space between them and making way for new shopping malls (including Sears) which began sprouting up along major freeways throughout Northern Californian coastal towns such as Santa Clara Valley before expanding inland into adjacent Baja California Peninsula communities including Tijuana and Mexicali which themselves experienced similar populations surges during this period (until these areas lost their status following Mexican independence). Today much of what once comprised Fortuna has either been built over or completely destroyed by development while still remainder includes several small businesses located around town square as well as several historic homes remaining largely unchanged from when they first went on sale decades ago; making it yet another reminder that good old fashioned rural living can be just as profitable today as it was back then when most everyone lived close to where they worked or raised their families – if you know where to look!
