Fortuna is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley and has been inhabited by Mono people for over three thousand years. Fortuna was founded on April 12, 1853 by Captain James Gunnison as an agricultural settlement on the San Joaquin River. The name "Fortuna" means "place of good luck." Fortuna became a post office on March 15, 1850. In 1875, Fortuna had its first school and saw its first crop of cotton. In 1886, Fortuna welcomed its first white settler when John Sutter arrived from Sacramento with his family to homestead in what is now the city of Merced. From 1888-1988, Fortuna served as chairwoman for the Kern County Board of Supervisors. In 1923, Atherton Petroleum Company began production at nearby Dominguez Rancho Seco oil field and named their new town after Atherton's founder and president - Cecil Boulware Waddell Jr.. The influx of people led to a dramatic increase in development in Fortuna; businesses opened up including a grocery store (1927), doctor (1928), auto parts store (1929), bank (1930), movie theater (1931) and more importantly homes started piling up like pancakes on a pancake maker - much to the chagrin of some who thought this uncontrolled growth was bad for business performance and quality control. In 1940 during World War II most residents took up arms against the Japanese invaders but soon returned to normal life once hostilities ended In 1942-1945 many residents worked at local munitions plants supplying ammunition for various campaigns throughout North America By 1951 there were only ten homes left in downtown Fortuna while many other businesses closed because competition from larger cities made it difficult to keep up with economic growth rates . However things changed dramatically when Chevron Corporation announced plans to drill for oil under El Centro Avenue making it one of the largest public projects ever undertaken in Kern County . With growing awareness about environmental hazards associated with oil drilling operations along El Centro Avenue hundreds of residences increased prices from $8 per square foot to $25 per square foot overnight leading to rapid depreciation in value until finally becoming uninhabitable around 1970s due largely to air pollution problems generated by large fracking operations that took place nearby

Fortuna is a small town located in Inyo County, California. It was founded in 1876 by James Fenton and his brother-in-law, Samuel Morse. The first post office was established in 1877. In 1916, Fortuna became the county seat of Inyo County. Today, it is a small community with a population of about 350 people. The ZIP code for Fortuna is 89619. The history of Fortuna can be traced back to 1862 when Augustus Condon discovered gold near present day Fortuna Boulevard and Hwy 395. A group of men named Pete, Tom and Dick set out to find the gold while others worked on building roads and ranching properties around the area. On October 28th, 1862 two men claimed they had found gold on property adjoining Joe's Ranch east of town: JOSEPHINE ANDERSON (Pete) and JOHN WALKER (Tom). This claim led to an early mining exploration which soon proved false as no gold could be found at that location; however this discovery did help start construction on what would become known as "Fortuna" later that year. In 1865 John Walker sold title 1 to James Fenton who also donated land for a new courthouse and jail which were built in 1866 along with other buildings including a four story brick schoolhouse which served as the community's first public elementary school from 1867 until 1911 when it closed due to budget cuts by then Superintendent JAMES LEE (Samuel Morse). The school burned down in 1959 but was replaced by another building that still stands today; the old high school building now houses the GALAXY CLUB! It wasn't until 1870 when Sheriff AARON BALLISTICUS arrived in town after hearing reports of Chinese miners trying to dig treasure under Highway 395 near present day Bakersfield that law enforcement began operations within this small rural community situated between Mono Lake and Yosemite National Park - an area now known as Gold Country! For many years until shortly before World War II, deputies from nearby Lone Pine patrolled much of Inyo County while local residents conducted their own investigations into any illegal activity taking place within their boundaries! One such deputy sheriff during this time was WILLIAM TUCKER who many believe may have been responsible for saving Queen Victoria from assassination attempt outside her Buckingham Palace residence back in 1885! One interesting event which took place during prohibition days occurred on November 6th 1924 when EDWARD ZUNIER came into town from Lone Pine accompanied by several band members supposedly looking for Methodists being held at nearby Redondo Beach Jail following their sermon tour through central California campaign stop #2 - one week prior to Ulysses S Grant becoming President! After interrogation revealed no contraband had been taken or discovered inside either Cell Block D or any other Detention Center operated by authorities during these times there were concerns among some locals about possible organized crime activities emanating from outlaw biker gangs roaming these parts; however nothing ever materialized unfortunately leading some historians TO speculate offered bribes/protection money resulting in escapes!! Ultimately though no charges were filed resulting only chuckles amongst those involved thanks largely to Zunier's insistence upon conducting himself entirely lawfully despite knowing full well what could happen should he get caught!!!
