In 1907 it became one of the first towns in Contra Costa County to be incorporated as a city with a full complement of governmental institutions; including an elected mayor and city council. Fortuna's growth continued through World War II until its incorporation as an independent city in 1951. The post office at Fortuna was established on July 17, 1887, and served until it ceased operations on November 15, 1951. The first settler at Fortuna Creek was Elisha Dickinson who arrived in April 1887 from New York City with his family. He built a cabin near what is now Main Street while others followed soon after: George Sutherlin (1888), Levi Coffin (1889), Hiram Lyon (1890), Charles Ahern (1892), Alfred Hirschhorn (1893). In 1895 there were 100 households and 5 businesses; however by 1910 only 27 households and 2 businesses remained. In 1922 San Francisco earthquake damaged much of downtown San Francisco so many people decided to move away from downtown for fear that their homes would also be destroyed or looted during the height of the earthquake scare which lasted for several days thereafter throughout most of Northern California including Contra Costa County excepting Fortuna where all classes opened up early to flee potential danger . Most people moved out before noon on September 12th 1922 because they knew that if they stayed any longer their homes would have been destroyed anyway during what turned out to be one of Californias worst natural disasters ever! Many local businesses closed down due to lack of customers during this time period but some such as Alameda Coffee increased production even though no damage was done to their buildings! Aftermaths like this are often referred to as "The Great Gatsby Movement" because many families who had made life adjustments left for good leaving behind those who couldn't or wouldn't leave such as social clubs and other organizations that flourished during rebuilds . By 1928 almost 60% of residents were professionals although 10% still worked within close vicinity of residences
Fortuna is a small town in California, located about 33 miles east of Los Angeles. The community was founded in 1884 by John L. Nichols and his wife, Emma Willis Nichols. It initially consisted of only a couple of buildings, but soon grew to include adozen or so homes. By the early 1920s, the population had increased to around 100 people. In 1925, Fortuna joined the city of Industry as it grew rapidly after being incorporated as a town pursuant to an Act of Congress which allowed towns to be created adjacent to cities with a population over 5,000 residents. In the late 1940s and 1950s, Fortuna became an important center for aircraft manufacturing due to its location at one of the few Air Force bases in Southern California. In addition, it also became home to several major companies such as McDonnell Douglas and Northrop Grumman. However, by the 1990s much of this industry had moved out west or been replaced by new technologies such as 3D printing technology which made production more expensive and labor-intensive than earlier methods. Today Fortuna remains an active community with many businesses and residents who continue their traditions including cultural events like summer festivals and fall harvest celebrations
