Fortuna is a city in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Fortuna is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River and has been inhabited by Native American people for more than 4,000 years. The town name may be derived from "Fortunatus", meaning "the good fortune of the town". The first Europeans to visit Fortuna were Spanish traders in 1769. In 1821, Franciscan friars established a mission here after being sent by Pope Pius VII to explore the area around San Francisco Bay. A year later, Mexican soldiers burned down the mission and all that remained of it were someMission buildings and a few earthworks. In 1835, an act of Congress designated Fortuna as part of Rancho Atwater del Norte (later Rancho Santa Clara), which also included such towns as Watsonville and Colusa. On July 15, 1840, when Mexico became one country again under President Manuel Micheltorena, Custer's battalion reached Fortuna while marching through this region during their campaign against General José Castro y Costilla. In 1862–1863 two groups of Mormon settlers led by LDS apostle Orson Hyde arrived at what was then rancho Atwater del Norte; they began building Fort Needles there soon after arrival. One group continued on to build Utah City nearby until 1865 when they left due to political differences over polygamy in Salt Lake City - these Mormons are generally considered pioneers in Utah history because they organized what is now called Mesa Verde National Monument near Logan UT rather than moving westward into federal territory like most others associated with that movement). They built homes on government land that had been donated to them and developed a strong downtown district characterized by high-rise apartments and heavy industry. By 1939, only a few hundred people were living in Fortuna but it was still an important center for local agriculture and ranching operations. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed at Camp Roberts (now known as Rancheria Road) near Fortuna before they moved into military housing units across the state at Camp Pendleton. This led to increased vehicular traffic on Rancho Rd., which caused serious problems for drivers trying to navigate around curves while following trucks carrying goods back and forth between Modesto and San Joaquin Counties; this also created dangerous conditions for pedestrians walking home after work or shopping during off-peak hours. In 1957, when Interstate 5 was realigned through central California,exit 17A (Rancheria Rd./Fortuna Blvd.) leading out of town became numbered I-5 south instead of exit 17B (Modesto/San Joaquin Counties). As a result of this change in routing, access to most areas east of I-5 changed hands multiple times over the years: Modesto got control of exit 17A (Rancheria Rd./Fortuna Blvd.), San Joaquin County took over exit 17B (Modesto/San Joaquin Counties), then both entities regained control when I-5 rerouted again around 2004 leaving just exit 17A open to traffic heading northbound from Antioch/Napa County onto State Route 494 westbound towards Stockton etceteras
