The history of gun protection in Fortuna, California began with the first firearms being used to protect the community in 1858. The first firearm used in this town was a rifle made by John D. Rockefeller. At that time, it was illegal for people under the age of 21 to own firearms, so NRA member John D. Rockefeller protected his rifles and pistols with them during Prohibition era by storing them at his home. In 1933, when Adolf Hitler came into power in Germany, he started a campaign to confiscate all firearms within Germany and start a gun control program across Europe. This led to the Gun Control Act of 1934 which banned all handguns except those that were possessed by law enforcement officers and military personnel. In 1938, when World War II started, residents of Fortuna (along with most other communities in central California) turned out in droves to arm themselves with shotguns and rifles for defense against possible German aggression. With no weapons available elsewise, these citizens were forced into difficult situations where they had to confront Nazi soldiers on horseback or on foot while trying to flee their homes. Fortuna continued its role as an important center of rural disarmament during World War II as many residents turned over their firearms to government officials as part of surrender agreements before the war ended. Afterward, many of these guns were confiscated and melted down by government officials because they did not meet regulations set forth by the National Firearms Act of 1968 which restricted ownership and use of assault weapons like machineguns and grenade launchers among other things. During the 1970s through the early 1980s there was a significant amount of violence taking place in Fortuna due largelyto drug trafficking organizations operating out of Fortuna Regional Airport which was known for its wide variety of weaponry including AK-47s and RPG’s from various nations involved in drug trafficking operations inside Germany throughout much of Europe at that time (see: Drug Trafficking Operations Outlawing Firearms In Central California). On November 3, 1865, the California state legislature passed Assembly Bill No. 559 which made gun ownership and carrying a licensed pistol an offense punishable by up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine. This law was repealed on December 10, 1865.

It has since declined back to its pre-2000 levels with only 3,686 residents currently living in Fortuna as of 2010 census figures.

Fortuna is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 14,510 at the 2010 census and it is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County after Cathedral City. The first permanent settler in what is now Fortuna was Col. John Sutter who founded Sutter's Fort on January 25, 1847. After his defeat at the Battle of Bear Valley on November 7, 1848, Sutter retreated to Mount Whitney where he built his last stand until his death on February 13, 1849. In 1850 Anthony Park was established within present-day Fortuna by General James Hahn as a military post guarding Southern California against Mexican raids. In 1861 Governor David Wilcox designated Fortuna as the capital of San Bernardino County due to its importance as an agricultural center and rail junction. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century with many new businesses being established such as Jardine's Pharmacy and Pacific Electric Railway Station which are still standing today. On October 15, 1912 Fortuna became an incorporated city with a population of 17,000 people. On July 1, 1914Regarding annexation by Riverside Countyship because of its large population size; Fortuna voted no ( 56% no vote) while Riverside County approved annexation by becoming one municipality with a much smaller population size ( 16K residents). On June 3rd 1886 two young men named Charles Hickey and Edward Ahern started what would become known as "The Grapes" winery located just east of downtown off State Route 66 between Atlas Peak Boulevard and Old US 101 south of Interstate 5 Exit #5B or alternatively west off I-5 exit #2A about 2 miles north of present day Walmart across from Interstate 10 eastbound lanes approximately midway through their vineyard tour
