The economy during the post-World War II era was based on agriculture with some light industry before moving to services in the late 1960s when new housing developments began to be built around US 395 and other highways nearby including Interstate 5 (I-5). The 1990s saw a renewed interest in commercial development with more people starting businesses here since it was only 10 minutes from downtown Sacramento by car or bus which made it an attractive place for high tech companies like Apple Inc., Intel Corp., Microsoft Corp., Adobe Systems Inc., Oracle Corporation, Symantec Corporation, Hewlett Packard Company (HP), Dell Computers and others to locate their headquarters or technical staff while still being close to family and friends who could grow crops or provide services within easy driving distance. Today Fortuna has developed into a vibrant small town with several thousand residents that enjoy good quality of life despite its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Sacramento and San Bernardino counties
