It is located on the right bank of the Kern River and is bordered to the north byfigures 17 miles wide and to the south by Bakersfield. The name "Fortuna" comes from two Spanish words meaning "luck" or "fortunate". La Vega means "the flat area", while Fuego refers to a fire that used to be common in this part of California. The first Europeans to visit this area were Father Francisco Xavier López de Ayala and his party in 1769. They named it San Diego de Alcántara after St. Dominic who had died previous year at age seventy-nine years old. Fortuna's history started long before its current form as a town platted in 1867 by James Wickersham under license from Governor Pio Pico. At first, all of what is now downtown was just some scattered farms and ranches surrounded by forest land grant owned by Captain John Sutter and his brother-in-law Dragoons Jervis Cobb and George Armstrong Clark with their families nearby on both sides of the Kern River. A post office called Fortuna was established in 1868, but was moved several times due to changing location until it finally sat at its present site in 1870 when water rights were acquired for what would become downtown including parts of today's State Capitol Building complex (now known as Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library). In 1908 an act entitled An Act for creating Township of Fortuna was passed authorising James Wickersham Jr., local developer, to plat out large areas east of where he currently stands on sections now occupied by downtown including much of our present day State Capitol Complex built between 1912-1914 on land granted earlier by Judge Augustus Coker who also later served as mayor of Fresno; prior annexation taking place during 1911-1912 through an act entitled An Act for adding City Limits thereto (and included within Arenita Rural Union School District). In 1933 various streets were rerouted within city limits following the infamous Sacramento Freeway Rush Hour traffic pattern which caused major destruction throughout much of downtown including many homes which still stand today testamenting how well planned it actually was given then current street routing restrictions having been put into effect only five years earlier! A new high school opened adjacent toArenita Municipal Airport late 1966/early 1967 providing instruction for students grades 8th thru 12th being one stoplight away from neighboring Lynx High School across Donahue Parkway making it possible at last for those living near Downtown with no alternative but walkable suburbs such as Southerntown & Diamond Bar - three blocks away each - simply go outside instead! Finally construction began soon thereafter upon designation as a Comprehensive Plan Departmental Center funded largely with Federal Highway Administration funds via a contract awarded January 1st 1968 through Midland Engineering Company formerly headed up by future Mayor Norm Coleman himself - one block northward next door on West Seventh Street oppositeArenita Municipal Airport - designated business district boundaries expanding outward along arterial roadway shoulders thereby resulting not only in decreased crime rates but also more jobs available closer together making Downtown even more manageable becoming one continuous business districtrather than scattered individual businesses existing mainlywithin Business District boundaries

In recent years there have been efforts made by local citizens to maintain many aspects of traditional Fortuna life such as keeping open the old schoolhouse which serves as both primary cultural institution for locals (along with numerous art galleries) as well as hosting various festivals each year
