In 1903, Fortuna incorporated as an unincorporated community and has remained that way ever since. The name "Fortuna" comes from the Latin word fortunae which means "luck". The downtown area of Fortuna was built around a natural gas well that still produces gas today. A local company named Imperial Oil drilled the well in 1918 and started production of gasoline and other fuels in 1919 under the name Empire Gas Company. In 1941, after World War II ended and America entered into a new era of Cold War tension with Russia, Imperial Oil switched to producing kerosene for use by American military personnel stationed abroad. With production now switching back to gasoline and other fuels, Emperor's store closed its doors for good on December 20th of that year after more than 50 years of business operation Downtown- becoming one of only two such stores remaining within Contra Costa County at that time! In 1951-1953 local school Superintendent Hinton Wofford developed plans to build what would become known as Westmont Elementary School on land near Interstate 680 just north of downtown Fortuna - resulting in much celebration by locals throughout December 1953 when construction began! This iconic building currently houses Kaiser Permanente Medical Center - one of many businesses located within walking distance or short car ride from all residents & businesses in town! Today there are few remnants left from our past including Welcome Arch which served as both a terminus for mail transported eastward via horse drawn wagons then up Main Street until 1865 when Route 5 replaced it; three churches built between 1923-1927 along with Masonic Lodge #2 (now an art gallery); four businesses opened prior to 1957: emperor's store; jeanfreds department store; bakery; water tower/pumps; pharmacy...the list goes on and on!
Fortuna is a small city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 12,965 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern border of Oakland and is east of the city of Berkeley. Fortuna was founded in 1867 by Captain James A. Fortuna as a rancho named Rancho de las Calles de la Fortuna. In 1868, Captain Fortuna sold the ranch to John Sutter and his brother-in-law, Jedediah Smith. They renamed it Oakland after their new home town in Ohio. The first post office opened in 1870 and was called Rancho de las Calles de la Fortuna; it closed in 1875 because of lack of mail service from nearby Berkeley. In 1876, the San Francisco & Southern Pacific Railway built an line throughOakland from downtown to Jack London Square and then north to Fremont; this railway changed the name of Oakland from Rancho de las Calles to Fortuna on its arrival. In 1886, streetcars began running between Oakland and Fremont; this became known as "the first streetcar ride." On May 25, 1888, California's first primary election took place in Oakland with voting taking place by caucus instead of balloting due to concerns about fraudulence among many early voteers (and possible spoilage). George Hearst had organized a caucus campaign that successfully won reelection as State Senator despite being only 8% popular among Californians polled statewide! In 1914 when Republican Nestor Mancini ran for governor against Democrat Phil Hartman, there were rumors that he might run for mayor or state senator if Hartman lost but no evidence ever surfaced supporting such claims – however he did eventually win both positions! A large wind tunnel was constructed at Livermore Lab during World War II which helped improve engine performance and shortened manufacturing times for war planes etc.; however after the war ended many jobs went away while other industries grew faster than Livermore Lab could keep up so today livermore lab still has some federal funding but mostly research/development now
