Fontana, California is a small town located in Fontana County, California, about an hour east of Los Angeles. The population was confined to less than 1,000 residents until the early 20th century when it began to grow rapidly due to its location on the eastern edge of what is now the city of Los Angeles. In 1907, George Wickersham founded and operated the first optics store in Fontana. The business continued operation for many years before being sold to Harry Kesselman in 1928. Kesselman continued to operate the store until his death in 1951. The store remained open until 1984 when it was closed down by local businessman John Ladd after more than 50 years of business. Ladd rented space inside a large shopping mall adjacent to his business and conducted operations from there until he retired in 2006. He then donated all his assets including the former store building and associated equipment back to Fontana's history museum which has since operated it as a public museum since its creation in 2007. The museum offers programs such as exhibits on optics and scopes, lectures by experts on related topics, and events such as monthlyazer competition where people are encouraged to bring their own telescopes for best results). In 1960, Scopes' granddaughter acquired Mount Wilson's entire collection of telescopes and planetarium equipment including three scopes designed by him: "Eagle" (1962), "Phoenix" (1967) and "Starry Night" (1976).

The history of Fontana begins with the construction of a mission here in 1847 by Father Francisco José Garza and his companions Francisco and María de la Concepción Maggi. The mission was abandoned in 1858 after Mexican forces sacked it during what became known as the Alta California campaign of conquest by General Antonio López de Santa Anna. A few years later, however, another group of Franciscans built a convent here on land that had been donated by rancher Manuel Peralta. In 1868, when Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded nearby, the two missions were combined to form one new religious center called San Gabriel Arcángel Fuego (or San Gabriel Fire). In 1951, an act of Congress designated Fontana as the County seat for Fresno County and annexed neighbouring Parmer Valley into the town limits; however, local opinion continued to support taking Monterey Peninsula into Fontana so that it would have its own municipal government. In 1955 voters passed an ordinance setting aside 1/3 of a mile (1 km) east of Main Street within the town limits for future parkland serving as a municipally owned open space including tennis courts and playgrounds; this parcel remains today as Park Boulevard east of Main Street. In 1963 residents voted to annex neighboring Saugus into town limits; however again there was strong resistance from many residents who felt they deserved their own municipality because they had more economic development potential than those living within Town Limits; this annexation never came through due to political differences between Mayor James Waddell and then-County supervisor Donny Hathaway Sr.). On July 1st OF 2009 Fontanas first high school graduate Kaitlyn Baez graduated from High School #2 just in time for her Senior Prom!

The townspeople were able to get $5,000 from Morse for planning and engineering work on their new village – which they christened “Old Town” – but it didn’t take long before people began moving into downtownFontana from outlying areas includingEastlake Street (now North Grand Avenue), Pioneer Drive (now University Boulevard), Westchester Drive (now First Street), South Highland Drive (now North Highland Avenue), Cottonwood Road (now University Boulevard) and much of Central Avenue today’s Main Street!
