Fontana, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madera County seat and it is known for its irrigated cotton fields and citrus orchards. The first Europeans to visit Fontana were Spanish traders who named it San Felipe on November 20, 1769. The name came from Felipe de Neuvilleta, an explorer who claimed this area for Spain in 1769. On July 15, 1847, Mexico lost control of Alta California to United States forces during the Mexican–American War. The General Kearny took possession of all land east of the Baja Peninsula and established Fort Yuma on October 14th in what is now Downtown Los Angeles. On December 12th he ordered Captain John Cushing to establish a military post at Fontana with stores, barracks, artillery and other supplies for American troops stationed in Alta California until further notice. Captain Cushing arrived on January 10th 1848 and found that there was no town or village existing within his assigned boundaries; instead he discovered a small stream called Paloma Creek which led him to believe that he had reached what would become Fontana when he spotted several large cotton plants nearby. He named his new post San Gabriel Mission after Saint Gabriel (May 3rd) whose feast day was that year (1847). 1st Lt James Ewing laid out streets in what are today downtown Los Angeles on May 4th 1849 while still stationed at Fort Yuma; these were later renamed 5th Street & Flower Stakes Place after Major General David Gebhardt’s headquarters building now located at 6 th Street & Flower Stakes Place just south of Veteran’s Plaza across from Staples Center shopping mall). From here 1Lt Ewing surveilled Rancho Adobe guarimbas near present-day Warner City; these areas became part of present day Fontana when Rancho Adobe was sold by Gov Manuel Nieto to Hacienda del Rey rancher Don Pedro Tejanos circa 1880-1890 grid map) . After Mexican independence both parts of Alta California passed through US hands as part of Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo: Las Californias – US including San Francisco – Mexico INCLUDING FONTANA went under Mexican sovereignty unofficially but title remained with US because they owned more land east than west so they got most titles especially around LAX airport before 1924 when planes were registered using their original license plates starting with XYZ

It was founded in 1887 by John Fontana and his wife Anna Maria as a small farming community on the east side of San Bernardino County. In 1912, Fontana became an incorporated town. The city's growth slowed during World War II as many residents enlisted in the military or moved to other cities. However, post-war growth resumed and Fontana reached its peak with a population of 54,914 in 1970. However, the city's population began to decline from the 1980s until it peaked at 27,521 in 2000. As of 2015, Fontana's population is 23,895. The history of Fontana begins with John Fontana and his wife AnnaMaria who settled on the east side of San Bernardino County in 1887 after unsuccessful attempts to find land west of Interstate 10. Their farmstead was built on what is now Old Stagecoach Road just south of present day Cathedral City before becoming an incorporated town in 1912 when alluvial soils were discovered near their home base (now known as East Side Drive). After years of hard work between husband and wife – including laying out streets and building churches –fontanna quickly grew into one of Southern California’s most prosperous communities with over sixty businesses operating along Broadway Street alone during Prohibition era 1920-1929; more than doubling its pre-1920 size! By 1939 however Bethlehem Steel Company closed its steel plant which had created numerous jobs within local schools across town yet shuttered businesses downtown for lack of demand for steel among other munitions plants closure throughout WWII due to limited war production available domestically; leaving many citizens feeling abandoned & left high & dry economically compared to nearby Riverside or Orange County communities experiencing rapid postwar development! In spite OF these challenges during difficult times (& typical adversity faced by many small towns throughout America), “Johnstown” continued strong thru annexation by neighboring Riverside after white flight from racially segregated Southwestern Los Angeles following Brown v Board Of Education decision federalizing public education areas rulings implemented nationwide; becoming one hundred percent African American through Integration ordinance passed by voters 3/27/1950 – making it one of only 2 full metropolitan areas with both black & Hispanic majorities As recently as 2017 citizens banded together to help preserve much beloved Municipal Pool which continues play today despite some issues such as algae blooms reaching alarming levels due to unsanitary conditions inside pool complex . Despite these challenges recent studies have shown that water usage rates are trending upwards not downwards since joininization allowing for increased park use without impact on ratepayers’ wallets! One particular highlight associated with early days forfontanas included hosting first major rodeo event held outdoors on historic Rinconada Valley Open Space Preserve October 7-11 1886 headlined by $1 million purse given away by Governor Al Jolson – showcasing top amateur rodeo riders from all over country . Fontana was founded in 1887 by John Fontana and his brother, Edward. The brothers were immigrants from Italy who had come to California to join the gold rush. They named their new town after the Italian Villa of Fontana, which they had seen while on their journey. The town grew rapidly, and within a few years it had a population of over 100 people. In 1912, the town was renamed Fontana Heights after Mrs. Hilda A.G. Hill, one of its early boosters and an influential local figure. Mrs. Hill died in 1916, but her donation remains an important part of the community's history and culture.
