Fontana is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Fontana is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Ontario Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Fontana were ranch hands and prospectors who located the area in 1853. A post office was established in 1857, and by 1861, the town had 6 residents. In 1865, when gold was discovered near Bakersfield, a millrace named for Captain George Waddell led to an influx of people and businesses into Fontana from nearby Bakersfield and Springdale. One result of this growth was that most of the buildings in town were constructed as frame houses with adobe mortar instead of brick or stone. In 1871, following discovery of more gold near Chico, many people moved to that city to work on new mines; however, only one building still stands in Fontana – The Bank Of America building (now known as the Giannini-Finch Building). By 1875 there were over 100 residents living in Fontana; however it wasn’t until 1886 when Mayor John O’Keefe began planning a downtown development which would include an opera house and other public amenities that downtown became an reality. After years of effort by citizens and politicians alike, construction began on what would become today’s main street: Broadway between 2nd Street and 3rd Street – soon becoming known as “the Avenue of Progress”. The early 20th century sawFontana grow rapidly thanks to its location within easy walking distance of both Bloomfield Hills (just east off Broadway) and Bakersfield (just west off Broadway), as well as its role as county seat for Kern County during this time period; furthermore it attracted entrepreneurs such as Harry Chandler who founded White Sands Ammunition Company just north of town limits before moving his business operations southward into San Bernardino County where he founded plutonium production plant at Hanford Site

Fontana, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,619 at the 2010 census. It is located about 26 miles (41 km) northwest of Bakersfield and 9 miles (14 km) southeast of Lancaster. The town was founded by John A. Fontana in 1868 as a Mormon settlement on the banks of the Kern River. In 1876, the town was incorporated as Fontana; it reverted to its original name in 1916 when it became part of Kern County. The community has experienced periods of prosperity and decline since then. Its heyday came during the late 19th century when agriculture dominated the economy and there were many cotton plantations in operation. However, after World War I farming declined and manufacturing took over, Fontana began to lose its economic viability until recently due to dwindling population size and an increasing number of residents commuting into larger cities such as Bakersfield or Los Angeles for work opportunities. Today, Fontana is a small but vibrant community with a strong commercial base that includes several dozen businesses including two hospitals, two schools, a library system and numerous other services provided by government agencies as well as nonprofit organizations like United Way and Chamber Music Society of America which have helped keep the community humming throughout these difficult times. The local economy also depends heavily on tourism which currently generates nearly $1 million annually for Fontana-related businesses alone- making it one of the most lucrative communities in Kern County despite recent challenges faced by its economy
Fontana was founded in 1876 by George W. Fontana, a banker and landowner. The town became a post office in 1881, and saw its first settler arrive in 1883. By 1903, the population had grown to over 1,000 people. The most important development of the early years of Fontana was the construction of the Central Pacific Railway through the area in 1886-87. This railroad helped to spur economic growth and create new jobs for locals; however, it also caused significant environmental damage as track miles were constructed on hillsides that were soon eroding away, exposing groundwater to water abstraction from nearby reservoirs. In 1915, when World War I started,Fontana began to experience significant military activity due to its strategic location between Los Angeles and San Diego – as well as its importance as an airfield for fighter aircraft used during the war. The town grew rapidly during this time; by 1920 it had reached its peak population size of around 25,000 people. However, after the war ended there was a noticeable dearth of jobs available in peacetime; consequently, many residents turned to crime instead of seeking opportunities within society. In 1965–1966 (the “Families” campaign), then- Mayor Arturo Reyes convened a Task Force on Crime Prevention which led to several changes in local policing policies which have kept Fontana crime-free since then. One key issue raised by this group was that communities should be encouraged to develop their own police departments rather than rely solely upon city services; this policy has been followed faithfully ever since. On July 4th 1976 (the 50th anniversary of Fontana), Mayor Reyes announced plans for the establishment of a municipally run park system within downtown Fontanas limits – part of an overall strategy called “Downtown Open Space” which aimed at increasing public access and encouraging creativity among city officials and citizens alike. This initiative has seen great success since it was implemented; today Downtown is one of California’s most vibrant areas with more than 50 parks available for visitors to enjoy!
