Fontana, California is a town in Riverside County, California. The population was 18,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger Fontana–San Bernardino metropolitan area. The San Bernardino Mountains are to the west and east of town. The first known permanent settlement in what is now Fontana was established in 1872 by George Atherton and his family as a summer home on Rancho Cucamonga Mesa. In 1896, John Fenton opened the first retail store in Fontana. At that time, it was called "Fenton's Store." In 1905, J. P. Morgan and Company organized a railroad station there to serve their employees travelling between Riverside and Los Angeles through Fontana Valley. That same year saw the opening of Jack Dempsey's first professional boxing ring – located on present-day Sahara Avenue just south of Interstate 10 – which would become one of Southern California's most popular tourist attractions for over fifty years! By 1920, however, major development had taken place within the town limits around Pershing Road (now Sahuaro Boulevard). This included large-scale construction projects such as Dickenson Dam (1924), Foothill Air Force Base (1928), and Wells Fargo Field (1938).
