This donation marked the beginning of what would become known as Rancho San Antonio Country Club . In 1933 local banker Chauncey Weems purchased control of both Jens Jensen’s rancho holdings and most all remaining stock in American Telephone & Telegraph Company , making him sole proprietor/operator thereof until 1959 when AT&T merged with Bell Helicopter Industries Incorporated . In 1944 many industries closed down due to war-time production shortages and many residents moved away looking for different opportunities; however, some returned after the war ended. The population of Fontana increased slowly throughout most of the 20th century because there were few job opportunities available outside of agriculture or construction; however, this began to change with increasing suburban development within a short distance of downtown Bakersfield. Traffic congestion caused by new subdivisions resulted in an increase in crime rates which again prompted many people to leave town during difficult times; however, a recent resurgence has begun with growth across all sectors including jobs and retail businesses opening up along East Third Street as well as more affordable housing options available closer to town center than ever before .
