Fontana, California is a small town located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. The population was 6,524 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino-Ontario Micropolitan Statistical Area. Fontana was founded in 1907 by two brothers, John and Harry Fontana. They named their settlement after their father, Giovanni Fontana, who had settled in what is now Fontana Heights in 1871. The name "Fontana" has been used since then to describe a wide area extending from north to south and east to west within the city limits of San Bernardino County. The first store on South Main Street opened in 1908 and became one of the most popular businesses in town until it closed its doors for good in 1971. The last store operated as an antiques shop before being replaced by a modern day grocery store known today as CVS Pharmacy on East Lincoln Avenue which opened its doors on November 1st, 1994. After the war ended, Fontana slowly declined until its heyday as a manufacturing center came again during the late 1960s through early 1990s when new businesses were founded such as Ford Motor Company and Levi Strauss Strauss & Co.. However since then there has been steady decline with only 10% of residents living within walking distance of downtown or being served by public transportation; making it one of poorest cities in North America according to rankings from Maven Group/ Forbes magazine . I n 1984-1985 locals began protesting against plans by local business interests to move their main production building out into Arroyo Seca which would have destroyed much of what characterizes Fontana today including many historic buildings dating back to 1848-1860 such as Packed Grain Mill #1 built on land that once formed part of Haasiwin Park - home to Humboldt Wildflowers Preserve (formerly known as Stanislaus County Fairgrounds) - across from City Hall annexation boundary line making it difficult for anyone but those running property interests to keep up with changes taking place on their doorstep; this led eventually to calls for secession from Alameda County due to lack of representation within government structures ..... Although initially successful at rallying together community members behind a common goal – preservation – over time these protests turned increasingly confrontational with demonstrators frequently using force if necessary against officers dispatched to enforce compliance with orderlies’ orders not allow any public gatherings or displays without prior written consent from management ...... This violent response led ultimately to charges filed against some protesters resulting in 4 arrests ..... Despite all this turmoil local leaders remain committed protectors/watchdogs ensuring that similar issues do not arise going forward while continuing pursue economic development opportunities bothwithin&outsideofthecity limits ....
