In 1851, George Fenton built an adobe ranch house here called Palm Springs on land leased from Mexican General José Joaquín Cervantes Moreno y Ocampo for $1 per acre ($30 per square mile). In 1894, developer James Wickersham subdivided this area into lots for sale and began calling it Fontana after his father’s birthplace – a town in Northumberland County, England he had visited while vacationing there with his family during the year 1895. He named his subdivision “Wickersham Heights” because he owned all but one block of it at that time. Fenton died here on October 4th 1902 at the age of 86 years; four days before his deathbed he sold 1/2 interest in Wickersham Heights to fellow developer Edward Ladd for $5,000 cash plus other assets including 5 acres (20 hectares) adjacent to Palm Springs where he planned to build an estate.) Ladd renamed his tract “Fontana Hills” after his home state of Illinois., but never lived there as he left instructions that only family members could live there–a restriction later lifted when developer Richard Jaffe bought much of Ladd's holdings near Fontana Hills in 1978. In 1907 real estate developers John Dorman and Clarence Saunders bought 1/4 interest from Ladd in Fontana Hills; they turned it over to their son Harry Dorman Jr., who ran it as a resort development called "Dorman Park." On May 6th 1959 Robert Salka purchased property adjacent to Dorman Park from Harry Dorman Jr.; its name changed again to "Fontana" less than two years later when Salka developed it into a racetrack complex known today as "Fontanac casino."
