Famed for its crystal clear waters and pink sand beaches, Fontana has been home to many famous people including President Ronald Reagan and Marilyn Monroe. The area that now makes up Fontana was first settled by Ohlone Native Americans in the 17th century. A post office called "Fontana" was established in 1873, and the town incorporation took place on May 12, 1888. In 1906, there were 10 families living in what is now Fontana; they had all moved from nearby Bakersfield because of an outbreak of bubonic plague which had killed many people there. The name "Fontana" originated from two springs which were located near where the community now stands: Fountain Springs and Apple Spring/Fontanilla spring). In 1917 an American football team called "the Wildcats" played its first game against visiting Los Angeles Rams at Anaheim Stadium; it was won handily 14-0 by the Wildcats. By 1920s most of downtown had been built up with single-family homes and businesses; however some residents kept their homes into the mid-20th century through subdivisions and rezoning ordinances passed by local government officials. In 1940 a large military airbasecamp known as Tyndall Field became available when World War II ended and military personnel returned to civilian life; immediately upon its opening over 2 million people poured intofontanasoughtemployment or housed within its boundaries! Although not exactly a “ Designer Village” like Beverly Hills or West Hollywood early residents here did enjoy access to high end boutiques such as Hirschfeld & Glaser while also enjoying easy access to transportation via Douglas Rapid Transit Company buses which ran right outside their door (or on nearby streets). Many talented young women who grew up during this time spent summers working close to various water resources including swimming in Atchison River then paddleboarding or windsurfing at numerous local beaches only minutes away (and still do today)! During much of my teenage years I would walk down Main Street between Bridalveil Drive & Oceanside Boulevard just south of State Route 381(now Gadsden Blvd) where I would find locally made gingerbread houses being Built every day by Marlene Vosburgh (a sweet delicious lady who lived across from me until her death in 2018). Wellesley Elementary School across from Vista del Lago convinced their Superintendent Mrs Elizabeth Weiser that it would be a great idea for them to open their doors onto Main Street during winter months so that more students could get involved with school activities without having to go outside! Thank you Mrs Weiser for your leadership! 2 days after I moved out live next door on Her Majestys Highway opposite Walmart she starts building snowmen every day long before they got our streetlights... we should have named our street “Marlene Vosburgh Way”
