Fontana, California is a small city located in the San Bernardino County of Northern California. It was founded on October 15, 1885 by miners who were working for Southern Pacific Railroad. The name "Fontana" comes from the word "fontane," meaning wild flower. The first store in town was opened by W. C. Townsend and Co., a grocery and meat market. In 1886, the City Council decided to name the new city Fontana after General George Armstrong Custer because of his contributions to the American Revolution and because of his trophy called "Custer's Last Stand."
