Fontana, California (population: over 22,000) is a city located in the San Bernardino County of Southern California. It became an independent municipality on January 1, 1870. The population of Fontana was estimated at 11,500 in 1940 and it had grown to almost 28,000 by 1970. The history of gun slings goes back to the early 1800s when guns were first used in this area. In 1857 a man named William Hartnell patented a sling that could be attached to a horse’s bridle to send projectiles up into the air for target practice. This innovation allowed farmers and other people living near military locations to use firearms for hunting purposes without having to worry about being shot by friendly forces. During World War II, Fontana played an important role as one of several cities in Southern California that supplied ammunition and munitions for the war effort. From 1941 through 1945, Fontana produced over 2 million rounds of ammunition for Operation Overlord alone! In 1969, Mayor Harold Sperling created the city’s first park which included land adjacent to where present-day Elm Street meets East First Street. The park was designed as an open-air recreational area that would provide plenty of opportunities for citizens and their children to take part in activities such as fishing, swimming and shooting sports. The name Fontana comes from the Italian "Fontana" and means " fountain." The first settlement in what is now Fontana was called Villa Fiorillo and was founded by Antonio Fiorillo on November 3, 1857. Fontana became a city on December 10, 1915. In 1923, after years of discussion and debate between the city fathers of Fontana and Riverside Counties about how best to handle water supply issues within their communities, residents voted to create a new fontanawater district with its own water source. In 1928, the City of Fontana amalgamated with Riverside County to form Unified County government. In 1930 fonts Riverwalk Shopping Center opened at 5th Street and I-15 West in downtown Fontana which would become one of Southern California's most important shopping districts. The following year Citizensbank Arena opened as an all-purpose stadium for football and basketball games between Riverside Community College (RCC) Rams and San Bernardino Valley College (SBC) Bears under sponsorship agreement by CitizensBank/Jaguar Land Company which would continue until 1997 when it was sold to Robert Daly Group who then leased it back to RCC who renamed it Robert Daly Stadium). Other significant events during this time include: October 8th 1929 - President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered his keynote address at SBC entitled "From New Deal to National Recovery" located in front of Robert Daly Stadium; May 2nd 1950 - Mayor John Fetterman dedicated Stirling Air Force Base main gate; September 15th 1951 - NFL’s Los Angeles Rams played their first game at Robert Daly Stadium against the Chicago Cardinals; January 7th 1953 - Jack Kemp became Governor of California

The commercial success of the town made it possible for Dr. Fontana to build a large ranch near the town on land donated by his friend John Sutter. Some of Fontana's most famous residents include author Jules Verne (1862-1937), actor/director Will Rogers (1895-1967), baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller (1906-1972), singer Bing Crosby (1902-1997), and actress Barbara Stanwyck (1920-2007). In addition to its own attractions such as an amusement park and a water park, Fontana also hosted several annual events such as the California State Fairgrounds fair in 1911, which was attended by President Roosevelt; that same year's Rose Bowl Game between USC Trojans football players from Pasadena and Stanford Cardinal players from Palo Alto;the Sweet 16 basketball games during the 1966 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament;and the 1984 Summer Olympics torch relay through downtown Fontana

In 1915, Fontana became home to the world's largest water tower when it was built on land that had been donated by Julius Rosenwald. In 1925, Fontana hosted the world's first international auto show and parade at City Hall Park. The event helped promote automotive manufacturing throughout Southern California and attracted attention from around the world. In 1957,Fontana inaugurated its own radio station KFAN (91 FM). KFAN would become one of America's most popular stations with its classic rock format until it switched to an all-news format in 1995. On July 14th, 1984 a gunman opened fire on a crowd of protesters during riots following gubernatorial candidate George Deukmejian's victory over incumbent Ronald Reagan
