Fontana is located on the eastern edge of Riverside and is bordered by the cities of Ontario and Moreno Valley to the south, Porterville to the east, and Cathedral City to the north. The downtown district includes the former hometown of Dwight D. Eisenhower, now part of Westminster. The first permanent settler in what is now Fontana was Nicholas Schoolcraft in 1847. A post office called Fontana was established in 1856, and remained in operation until 1874. The town site was patented on March 27, 1860 by John Fenton under title "Fontana Creek Ranch". On October 15, 1861 Anthony J. Rojas purchased from Fenton a tract of land extending along present-day Winchester Boulevard from US 36 east to US 64 west; this became known as Rojas Rancho Park East (now Rialto Heights). Rojas sold his interest in ParkEast in 1865 to James Prentiss; it remained with Prentiss until 1888 when it passed into ownership of George Waring Jr., who sold it to Jerald Crouse on May 1, 1899 for $3 million dollars ($ today). Crouse built many homes within what are nowWOODLAND PARK (a suburb) and CITY OF FORT WAYNE (an urban area), while also developing much of what is now HEIGHTS NEARWEST (west side) including Montrose Center which he named after his father-in-law's family home near Heights; today's Montrose Circle features portions of that rancho park property once within CITY OF FORT WAYNE boundaries but still managed by CRUSE & SONS.). In 1925 LAUDERDALE COUNTY WAS FORMED FROM THE PRECINCTS OF RIVERSIDE AND FORT WAYNE; AT THAT TIMEfontanas annexation followed suit as part of that county boundary change.. At its inception La Cañada Flintridge had a population numbering only 9 people (). In 1969 Fontanas annexed Willowbrook Canyon Village which at its peak had an estimated population over 100 people (). Fontana, California was founded by the Fontanas in 1873. The original home of the Fontanas was a log cabin on the banks of the Feather River. In 1876, the family moved to what is now known as Rancho La Purisima, which they named after their puritanical daughter, Purisima. The rancho was located in present-day Fontana and included land that presently makes up most of Riverside County. In 1888, John Sutter arrived in Northern California from Stockton and purchased part of Rancho La Purisima from the Fontanas. He renamed it Sutter's Land and began developing it into a farming community with mills and houses. By 1893, Sutter had erected a large stone structure known as the Great Hall at his new site. This man-made hill became one of Northern California's most notable features due to its prominence in local society and its status as a symbol of economic development during the late 19th century. In 1901, farmers organized themselves into town groups called "communes", which were later replaced by city councils. In 1912, Mayor George Earle Haggerty (D) established City Hall here at Great Hall Site to serve as an administrative center for allfontana residents who desired government services without having to leave their homes or go through miles-long streets filled with voting precincts. From this location he could oversee all aspects of municipal life including elections, hiving off delinquent citizens into jails or other incarceration programs if necessary while also providing infrastructure such as water systems and fire protection that would continue unchanged until after World War II when those same services went outsourcened entirely to outside contractors
