Fontana, California is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and is south of Los Angeles. The city was founded in 1879 by James Wolkett Fontana and named after him. In 1902 it became part of the City of Riverside. The city has since grown to include several adjacent townships and a unincorporated area. The original downtown area still retains some historic buildings including the courthouse and jail which were built between 1879 and 1885. As with most large American cities, gun manufacturing played an important role in Fontana's history from its founding until the present day. Many guns that are still used today were made here such as handguns, rifles, shotguns and machineguns. Additionally, many other products such as ammunition were produced here as well including both hunting cartridges for game animals and high-capacity rounds for shooting pistols or revolvers. The first factory open in Fontana was started by George Custer Firearms Company in 1907 out of a small garage located on Main Street near what is now described as "the old post office". The city experienced rapid growth in the sixties and seventies as oil production increased in nearby Kern County. However, during the late seventies and eighties, Fontana experienced significant economic decline as a result of successive local energy shortages and some difficult environmental decisions made by city leaders. In 2002, Fontana formally merged with neighboring Lancasteria to form what is now known as Lancasteria-Fontana-Lancasteria-Lancasteria City Council District 4. The history of Fontana dates back to 1872 when John Fontana and his wife Lillie founded a small community called "Atascadero" about 12 miles (19 km) east of downtown Los Angeles on what is now known as Rancho San Jacinto Road. Atascadero was initially just a single family ranch house with several hundred acres (0.8 km2) of land used for farming purposes only; it later grew into one of Southern California's largest towns – home to over 1,000 residents by 1902. The original settlers were English immigrants who arrived in 1850s via ship from London; they began living in Atascadero until their departure for other parts of southern California during the 1860s because there were no available land grants or homes open to them." In 1922, whenfontanas first incorporated as an unincorporated village under Orange County law after becoming part of then newly created Kern County following statehood*, its citizens voted unanimously to become an independent city with its own police department*.* Although at first it struggled against rapidly growing competition from larger cities such as Los Angeles*, eventually stability emerged within our small town*.* During these early years we enjoyed good relations with both our neighbors*.* Our close proximity also allowed us easy access to goods manufactured outside our town*.* Over time however things changed *.* tensions between various groups in our town quickly escalated into violence which I believe started caused by personal gain rather than any underlying issues*. It should be noted that at this time most aspects related specificallyto agriculture were still handled primarily by hand due to lackof technology at that time*. We continued doing everything farmer’s way including cultivating fresh produce & raising livestock although we did have some indoor plumbing& electricity for lights back then *. We also took pridein having excellent water systems & using best practices during times OF drought*. Unfortunately today many aspects associatedwithback then simply don’t exist anymore like mailboxes w/ postcards still being delivered door-to-door etc….. so if you wantTo learn more about those days feel free but please don’t quote me on that! After experiencing significant financial success through oil production activities near Kern County*.,Fontanas fortunes declined beginning in earnest during the late 1970s due largely to unreliable regional energy supplies†† resulting from continuing geological volatility†† throughout much Of America(*). Some difficult decisions made regardingLos Angeles' growth potential also contributed towards this trend*: despite numerous offers from both business owners[…]and Mayor Garcetti [*], fontanas elected officials steadfastly refused(…)to annex adjacent agricultural communities such as Lancasteria which had begun experiencing rapid growth since 1978††*) even though these developments would have positioned us directly next door &&&&&&&&iddledependent upon each other economically (&*****). This situation came complete with costly legal challenges mounted by both sides culminating ultimatelyina $240 million judgment rendered againstfontanas government *.* Despite all this negative press*,the fact remains thatduring my tenure as mayor[…]I helped make fontanas one Of Southern California's Most dynamic Cities….& I'm proud To say That MyCity Is Still Here Today
Fontana is a small city in Riverside County, California. The population was 20,471 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Bernardino Mountains and east of Interstate 10. The name comes from an early settler, John Fontana, who named his rancho after himself and other nearby settlements. The first post office in Fontana opened in 1887. The city grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s as employees of General Motors relocated to the area to work on new production facilities near Indio and Ontario. During World War II, Fontana played host to U.S. military bases including Fort Irwin and Goodyear Air Force Base before they were closed down and replaced by civilians in 1945. In 1961, when Riverside County was created, Fontana became one of its six townships; it has remained that way since then. In recent years, Fontana has experienced a slowdown in its growth rate as many residents have moved away for more developed communities closer to Los Angeles or Orange County; however, there are still some pockets of high-density development within town limits which continue to thrive even as overall population numbers decrease over time
