In 1933, parts of downtown were destroyed by fire caused by an arsonist who set several gas stations on fire as part of a publicity stunt designed to promote his new car dealership across the street from where he lived. According to historian Drue Eddy, "the community has bounced back and forth between boom times and busts over its past few hundred years". In 1912, a new church was built in Fontana and served as both a community center and religious institution until it closed in 1978. During World War II, Fontana played an important role as an RAF airfield during WWII due to its strategic location at milepost 78 on I-5 between Sacramento County and Kern County.
