Fontana is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fontana–Winchester Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Fontana was Hyrum Greenough in 1847. A post office called Fontana was established in 1849, and continued to be served until 1893. In 1861, George Waddell bought land adjoining where Shasta Lake now stands and founded Waddellville on it. He named his settlement after his father-in-law, James Fenton Waddell (1792-1865). In 1865, two years after Waddellville had been established, John Sutter arrived from Northern California with his family and set up a cabin on land that he'd acquired just east of present day Fontana. He named the new settlement Sutterville because he had moved there from Sacramento County some time before. The community experienced its earliest growth during the Gold Rush era when thousands of people poured into central California looking for fortunes found in the newly discovered goldfields. By 1870, about 300 people lived in Sutterville; by 1880 it had risen to 1,500 residents. During World War II, many local businesses contributed to the war effort through their production of munitions such as gasoline and aircraft parts. Many products produced here were distributed throughout the Western US via truck or trainloads across country
