However, by 1871, it had outlawed slavery and became a anti-slavery community. In 1898, Fontana banned handguns because they were considered to be “unsafe” weapons.

It took its name from the nearby Fountain of Youth Ranch (now known as Fontana Hills). The first store in town was opened by W. H. Chaney and Brothers on Main Street in 1890. In 1911, when Riverside became an incorporated city, Fontana annexed part of neighboring Banning and became its third largest municipality with a population of 3300 citizens. In 1924 the City Council voted to annex part of Moorpark which had a population of 3000 residents at that time and establish Fontana as its fourth-largest municipality with a population over 5000 citizens On November 15, 1928Fontana voters approved incorporation into San Bernardino County On January 1st 1929Fontana's first fire department was organized In 1954 Mayor Forrest Davenport dedicated the new Civic Center which has been home to many events including the 1984 Olympics . The current building replaced an earlier building which burned down in 1933 . Today’s Municipal Building housed various buildings such as law enforcement headquarters before it moved to what is now South Park Drive in 1955

In 1886 it became part of what was then called the “Cities of Distribution” area which served as a hub for goods coming into California from outlying areas. By 1902 all but two of the original buildings had been destroyed by fire or earthquake; however, six more were erected between 1906 and 1912 to accommodate growth within the new city limits. The first post office at Fontana opened on December 3rd, 1887 under license from Chico. At that time there were only 2 residents living here- John Hickey (owner) and his wife Sarah Jane Gentry (resident). The mail service arrived on horseback which continued until 1907 when an electric railway reached town via Big Bear Lake. In 1916 an addition to town was built by Mrs Amany Herrera with her own money- this included a movie theater/theater complex known as The Herreras that remain today as one of Fontana’s most famous landmarks! In 1923 local businessman Paddy Hogan bought land northeast of town and began construction on what would become known as Hogan’s Store which still stands today across from Highway 93 nestled among tall trees near the village green! In 1938 during World War II many people working atSignal Radio Station FMKNG returned home to find their homes destroyed during bombing raids over their neighborhood- they rebuilt their homes nearby known as The Hogan House after Mr Hogan donated both land and funds! 2 years later when war endedangerly increased traffic caused some pretty severe damage to civic infrastructure including roads, bridges etc so it wasn’t until 1951 when Mayor Tom Armstrong introduced legislation calling for comprehensive repairs including replacement of entire streetlights along main drag!! This finally happened in 1958 when $5 million was allocated for repairs with funding being available through state & federal grants !! An estimated $10 million worth of work has since been done making Fontana one of the most modern towns in Kern County! TodayFontanas population numbers around 100 souls although some leave due to its very remote location & lack thereof amenities
Fontana was founded in 1887 by John Fontana and his brother, Alonzo. The city is named after the Fontanas, a family of Italian immigrants who settled in California in the mid-19th century. In 1907, Fontana became an incorporated city with a population of 15,000. In 1930, the city annexed parts of Rialto and San Rafael. In 1941, Fontana was bombed by Japanese bombers during World War II and lost many residents and businesses. During the postwar years, Fontana grew slowly but steadily as a result of its location on State Route 45 between Los Angeles and San Francisco. By 1960, it had a population of over 50,000. After Measure B was passed to annex more territory from Riverside County in 1972, Fontana's population reached 100,000 for the first time since 1920. In 2000-2001 Mayor Willie Brown proposed expanding the city limits to include new areas north of Interstate 880 east of Highway 101 and west of Interstate 5 (the current boundaries were established by Measure C). However voters rejected the proposal 3-2.
