The town was founded by Mexican land grants made to Peter Krumm in 1820 and named after Carlos Fontana y Alvarez who had died six years earlier at the age of 21 while serving as captain of a troop under General Antonio López de Santa Anna during the Mexican Revolution. The name "Fontana" originally referred only to the springs that lay along its banks; today, both springs are well known and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for their refreshing water temperature (above ), crystal clear water quality (near perfect), and dramatic views from many parts of town. The community grew rapidly due to its location on railroad tracks connecting Los Angeles with Riverside, Ontario and San Bernardino counties. However, since then it has been decline as a bedroom community for Southern Californians seeking new homes outside of Orange County. Currently there are only about 120 residents living in Fontana proper; most residents live in nearby communities such as Rancho Mirage or Jurupa Valley. Although much effort has been made over the years by local leaders and entrepreneurs to revive downtown Fontana – once home to more than 100 businesses – little appears imminent that would cause significant revitalization other than a renewed interest in downtown business districts throughout metropolitan areas nationwide from which many immigrants who came here during prohibition period chose notto return after repealened laws made it easier for individualsto purchase alcohol without having their transactions monitored by law enforcement authorities.
