On October 26, 1902, the last shot heard in this area was fired from Fort Sill when artillerymen opened fire on an Apache gathering at Doña Ana Pass during their campaign against Chief Cochise. A post office called Fontana operated until it closed on December 15, 1912; its residents had all moved to neighboring Arroyo Grande by that time. The name "Fontana" originated with General Don José Antonio Montoya y Costilla who purchased land east of present-day Arroyo Grande in 1795 while stationed at Presidio of Sonora during Mexico's independence from Spain. Montoya thought up the name given to him by his interpreter Juan Pablo de Ayala because there was no one living near Atascosa Creek where he proposed building a fortification known as La Casa del General – later renamed San José de los Angeles ( Queen’s House). settlement began along Atascosa Creek about four miles northeast of modern-day Fontana when Juana Sanchez de Cisneros married Melchor Dominguez and settled down about 1800 under the guidance of Mission Santa Margarita settlers Juan Perez and Pedro Nieto; they would become future Zoilas brothers controls over much of southern California including most of what is today Orange County seat Carson City before returning northward following Mexican War days in 1846 when they lost Rancho Rinconada to Anglo Americans under Captain John Cushing alias Padre Carrera which left them stranded 900 miles due south with nothing but water and cattle between them and Veracruz across Veracruz Bay; this event would forever change their fortunes as two years later Mexican forces retook Rancho Rinconada without losing a single soldier including Pardo Carrera despite reaching American soil only 1200 miles away finally adding another layer cake to their already multi layered cake Structure/Rules: “ No one can be pardo(wealthy) more than three times” thus giving rise to such surnames as Zoilas (from Cerro Gordillo), Cadena (Cadenaga or Cadenilla), Arenas ( Arenaza or Arenaza Station), Rojas (Rosales or Rojas Station) among others many still living today outside original settlements well into older age groups thanks largely to descendants attending various schools system wide throughout Southern California www.census2010dataonline .com
