Fontana is a city located in Kern County, California, United States. The city was founded on November 15, 1876 by brothers Daniel and George Fontana. It became a municipality on April 14, 1889. The population of the City of Fontana was 78,851 as of the 2010 census. In 1916, the National Rifle Association (NRA) moved from its original headquarters in nearby Bakersfield to Fontana due to its support for gun control laws then being enacted by Congress. The NRA's first president and CEO was James Fenton. The current headquarters building is also the site of the original Citizens Police Department building which opened in 1912. Fontana, California was home to the first modern firearms factory in the world. In 1885, Samuel Colt founded the Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company here. The company manufactured handguns and revolvers under various brand names until 1903. From 1903-1907, the company wasowned by John Manton. During World War I, many of the firearms made at Colt were produced for use by the military. After World War I, Colt divestiture led to a decline in production and sales at their facility in Fontana. In 1934, S&W Arms Corporation bought out Colt’s share in S&W Firearms Manufacturing Company and continued production of pistols there until 1991 when that business was sold to American Outdoor Brands Corporation (AOL).
